VSDB Family Engagement works to ensure no family feels alone in their journey. Meet and connect with other caregivers, build relationships with other students, and grow together as a community.

A variety of programs and services are offered to meet your needs. Whether you enjoy live discussions, recorded webinars, interactive family activities, resource books, or coffee and conversation with someone who "gets it" - we have something for you!

When families and schools work collaboratively, there is a positive impact on the student's health, academic, and well-being outcomes. Research has shown that students with engaged families have higher grades, show faster rates of literacy acquisition, attend school more regularly, have high-quality work habits and task orientation, and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college.

Hi! I am Julie Saum, the Family Engagement Specialist at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind in Staunton, VA. I am thrilled to be working to serve YOU as we support your student and family in the best way possible. 

I understand the journey of raising a child with a disability is full of twists and turns and you likely were not given a road map. We aim to provide you with guidance to support you as you and your family navigate this journey.
