About VSDB Outreach Services

Through our Outreach Services department, VSDB serves children, families, and educators throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. We are committed to serving the needs of all Virginia children who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired, or deaf blind, whether or not they are enrolled at VSDB. Therefore we also strive to help all educators in Virginia better meet the needs of these students.

VSDB Outreach Services are funded through a grant from the Virginia Department of Education.

FREE Diagnostic Services for Virginia Residents

Early identification of childhood hearing loss is of crucial importance to the child’s language development and academic performance. On the other hand, undiagnosed and unmanaged hearing loss during childhood places a significant risk of language delay, poor academic performance, and reduced social confidence.

Outcomes may be greatly improved by early identification of hearing loss and appropriate follow-up care. If there are concerns for your child’s language development or listening behaviors, your physician may recommend audiology testing to rule out underlying hearing loss.

Family ASL Video Lessons

American Sign Language is an important communication tool for family members of children who are deaf or hard of hearing, and those working with them. The videos linked below are a great place to start.

These lessons are based on the text, Sign Language for the Family: A Total Communication Picture Reference Book with permission from SKI-HI. Families in Virginia with a child who has hearing loss and who are using VSDB’s online lessons may request one free copy of this book from VSDB Outreach Services. To request a book, contact:
